The Mount Olivet Methodist Youth Fellowship was born out of an enthusiastic response to an announcement during one Sunday church service that, all young and energetic brethren who desired to work in the Lord’s vineyard were to meet after the service.
Thirteen (13) brethren responded and subsequently, exactly thirty-five years ago, on the 27th of October 1978, the Fellowship was formed. These thirteen dedicated brethren made up of eight (8) brothers and five (5) sisters met at the roundhouse of St Martin de Porres School where Mt. Olivet Society begun its operations.
This first historic meeting, led to the formation of our great Fellowship and years later, the formation of others within the Circuit. At the meeting, the name ‘Mount Olivet Youth Fellowship (MYF’) was adopted and the aims of the constitution were briefly explained to members.
Interim executive officers were appointed to lead the Fellowship and they included;
- The late Bro. R. J. Sam (Opanyin Sam) – President
- The late Bro. J. K. Quayson – Secretary
- Sis. Felicia Danquah – Treasurer
The Fellowship came to a consensus and scheduled the meeting day for Fridays from 7.00pm to 8.00pm.
Subsequently, the Fellowship had its maiden election on Friday the 23rd of November, 1979 and the following members were elected;
- Bro. J. Sarpong-Dam – 1st Vice President
- Sis. Gladys Morrison (deceased) – 2nd Vice President
- Bro. J. Kingsley Quayson(deceased) – Secretary
- Bro. Kwesi Asher (deceased) – Asst. Secretary
- Bro. Owusu-Ansah – Organizing Secretary
- Sis. Felicia Danquah -Treasurer
- Bro. King Moffat – Porter
- Bro. Dan Seedah – Executive Member
- Bro. J. E. Kubin – Executive Member
Led by these pioneers, the Fellowship plunged into serious kingdom business and begun preaching the Gospel of Christ to passengers at the Neoplan station at Kwame Nkrumah circle area. Other issues that were of utmost concern to the Fellowship were Bible Studies, prayer and fasting which were all aimed at living the motto of the Fellowship – “We Work, We Witness, We Worship”
The dynamism had a spillover to the other Methodist Societies within the Accra North Circuit to which the Mt Olivet Society belonged. It also led to the involvement of many members in church administration. Out of the Mt. Olivet MYF sprung out sister Fellowships in the various Societies and Nursery Societies in the Dansoman Circuit such as; Grace, Bread of Life, Maranatha, and Sukura.
The Olivet Voices, which initially started as Victory voices, sprung out of this revival.
The Fellowship also actively participated in communal work during the construction of the Mt. Olivet Chapel and this developed into the monthly periodic clean up ritual we termed as ‘Work at Site’.
The Fellowship was further divided into four groups in order to ensure effective mobilization and participation of members in its programmes. They are WESLEY, DAGADU, KITTOE AND CLEGG.
The Fellowship aspires to improve upon its strength and work on its weaknesses so as to live up to its accolade as ‘the backbone of the church of Christ’.
